At 44, I’m doing something a little unusual — starting over in a new career as an educator. Why? Most simply, I love the process of learning. I love to teach and I love being part of the process of discovery when someone discovers something completely new about the world or about themselves. This is the juice of life.
AND I have a lot of questions about how we educate young people. Questions like:
How does learning actually work in the brain?
Does memorization still have value or has memorization of facts gone by the wayside?
What’s inquiry-based learning all about and what are its benefits and potential pitfalls?
How did we end up with the current conventional approach to education and what indigenous ways of learning have worked for thousands of years prior?
What’s happening right now in schools for evaluation and where is it headed?
Is there still a point to homework?
These questions come from my experience as a parent, as a manager and coach of young professionals, and from my time in the classroom so far. If you’re a parent, teacher-in-training or even an experienced educator, you might have curiosities about some of these questions yourself.
My aim is to explore these topics to unearth current practices and share any evidence available that points to the most effective way to support the learning and development of our young people for success in school and the rest of life. Let’s bridge the gaps in understanding and practice across the worlds of school, family and career.
I endeavour to do more than just explain these topics — I want to explore them alongside you. So I invite you to join me on this journey and share in the comments: what topic in education do you want demystified? And we’ll embark on that journey together.
